Stylized movies to watch online

What do we mean when we say a film is "stylized"? The term refers to a deliberate departure from realism and naturalism in cinema, in order to highlight the artificiality of light, perspective, rhythm and time, color, and other cinematic elements to serve a specific idea or message. In other words: the least realistic films in the world—but ones that tend to captivate the senses. Below, check out a selection of stylized movies to watch online that show exactly what we mean.

Strange Darling is a crime and horror thriller about the violent chase between a man (Kyle Gallner) and a woman (Willa Fitzgerald) after spending the night together. Presented with stylized 35mm cinematography and a nonlinear plot, the narrative starts in the middle, making us sympathize with the woman being pursued. However, jumping backward and forward in time, the film gradually reveals that the truth is not as simple as it first seems. We can’t say more without ruining the surprise, but it is an entertaining and stylish film with clear "Tarantinian" aspirations. However, the presentation of events can be a bit problematic and outdated, so we recommend keeping this in mind while watching.

One of the best action movies of the 2010s, perhaps the best. After all, filmmaker George Miller returns to the franchise that put him in the spotlight of Hollywood to completely repaginate the production of the story. Out goes Mel Gibson and in comes Tom Hardy. In addition, he takes his foot off of exaggerated masculinity to bring on one of the most remarkable female characters in contemporary cinema with the figure of Furiosa (Charlize Theron). It's a tense and intense movie, which doesn't follow basic script standards, bringing action to the surface from the beginning of the film. Even if you're not a fan of action dystopias, it's hard not to get enthusiastic and excited about the feature. Here’s our saga movie.

This visually extravagant film really screams neon. It's not for everyone, but those looking for the grotesque, horror and beauty blended together in one cauldron are sure to enjoy it. The cast is full of famous faces, including Elle Fanning, Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendricks, Jamie Clayton (from 'Sense8'), Jena Malone ('Sucker Punch') and many more.

This is one of the most iconic and influential films of the first half of the 1990s. Quentin Tarantino's second feature film (after 'Reservoir Dogs') already presents all the characteristics that would make the filmmaker be revered: black humor, violence, crime, neo-noir atmosphere, long dialogues, meta-references and so on. Surprising at the time, the movie won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Screenplay.

Horror
Loosely based on Thomas De Quincey's essay 'Suspiria de Profundis' (derived from his experiences with opium), and with an aesthetic inspired by the 'giallo' cinema (Italian fictions of the 60s and 70s, about mysteries with explicit violence and erotism), 'Suspiria' is considered the masterpiece of director Dario Argento ('Deep Red'), as well as a cult classic whose influence marked filmmakers from Guillermo del Toro ('Cronos') to John Carpenter ('Prince of Darkness'), Clive Barker ('Hellraiser: Door to Hell'), Quentin Tarantino ('Kill Bill'), Nicolas Winding Refn (whose 'The Neon Demon' is a direct descendant) and Luca Guadagnino (who directed the 2018 remake). Conceived more as a film for the senses than for logic, it is a hallucinogenic experience between fairy tale and gothic terror, with a psychedelic production design that overflows with color through the cinematography of Luciano Tovoli, and an unforgettable soundtrack by the band Goblin. It is also the first and, by far, the most famous of Argento's 'Mothers Trilogy' (succeeded by 'Inferno' in 1980 and 'Mother of Tears' in 2007), which also became Jessica Harper's ('Phantom of the Paradise') most iconic role and marked the last appearance of the legendary Joan Bennett ('Evil Souls'), with also appearances by Miguel Bosé and Udo Kier.
